Midweek Music Update

 for 24th July, 2019

The Midweek Music Update (published on Wednesdays) is intended to give you a "sneak peek" at some new music that hasn't made my chart yet. It's comprised of two sections: the Hot New Track and the Fresh New Releases.

Each week, I'll choose one video for the Hot New Track -- one song that is certain to make my chart & playlist next weekend (based on all the points it's earned so far).

The Fresh New Releases are two or three videos that appear likely to enter the chart & playlist in the near future (based on YouTube views alone). All of the songs in this 2nd section will be relatively recent (i.e., released in the past month or so). Because they are so new, it might take an additional few weeks to make their way onto my chart.

Although I mention the total number of YouTube views for each video below, song selections are based on their YouTube views from the past seven days only.

Hot New Track:
This week's Hot New Track is "Comme Un Animal" by gay Turkish singer Mabel Matiz. This video was suggested by my friends over at Gay Music Chart. Mabel (whose real name is Fatih Karaca) sings parts of his lyrics in Turkish and parts in French, apparently to get past the notoriously strict Turkish censors. According to his Wikipedia page, he earned a degree in dentistry from Istanbul University before he decided to embark on a career in music. The word "matiz" is slang for "drunk" or "intoxicated" in the old Greek language, so his stage name could be translated as "Drunk Mabel". As I write this, the clip has 803,423 views on YouTube. In the past week alone, this video has gained an additional 40,453 views (an increase of 5.37% from the previous week).

Fresh New Releases:
The first Fresh New Release this week is "Louquinho" by bisexual Brazilian singer Jao. In Portuguese, the title means "a little bit crazy". If you're curious to see an English translation of the lyrics, you can find one here. This past weekend, Jao's clip for "Monstros" debuted on the LGBT chart at #34. His newest video currently has 2,462,198 views on YouTube.

The second Fresh New Release this week is "Bounce Back (Pride Version)" by straight English quartet Little Mix and their drag queen counterparts from Dirty Trix (who are also a part of the queer performance collective known as Sink The Pink). The song includes samples of the chorus from the 1989 hit "Back To Life" by Soul II Soul. The clip now has 3,845,096 views on YouTube.

That's it for another edition of the Midweek Music Update. Make sure to come back on Saturday or Sunday (depending on your time zone) for the latest Top 50 chart & playlist. Until then, I hope you all have a great week!
