Chart notes:
Finnish singer/songwriter Alma takes the top spot on my special Year-End Chart for 2022 with "Summer Really Hurt Us". The song's lyrics are all about picking yourself up after losing control and making mistakes. According to SoundCharts, the track has reached the Top 10 on the official charts of 23 different countries and has gotten all the way to #1 in 10 of them (Finland, Germany, the U.K., Norway, Ukraine, Tajikistan, North Macedonia, Russia, Poland, and Lithuania). On the global charts, the song's gotten as high as #128 on The Spotify Global Streaming Chart and #145 on The Shazam Global Chart. Here on Tad's LGBT Music Chart, the video spent a total of 18 weeks in the Top 50 including two weeks at the #1 position. As I write this, the video for "Summer Really Hurt Us" has amassed a total of 1,632,881 views on YouTube since its release in late September.
Three other LGBTQ acts have two videos in the Top 10 for the year, each of them getting to #1 on Tad's LGBT Music Chart more than once in the past twelve months:
- English singer Olly Alexander, known professionally as Years And Years, comes in at #2 with "Sweet Talker" and at #5 with "Hallucination"
- Brazilian drag superstar Gloria Groove is at #6 with "Vermelho" and at #9 with "Leilão"
- Italian rock quartet Måneskin is at #7 with "If I Can Dream" and at #10 with "Supermodel"
Rounding out the year's final Top 10, we have three more LGBTQ acts:
- transgender singer Dylan Holloway, known professionally as Dylan And The Moon, is at #3 with "Heaven Now"
- German DJ/producer Felix Jaehn comes in at #4 with "Call It Love"
- Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo is at #8 with "No One Dies From Love"
For the first time since I began publishing this blog in 2018, there's only one American act in the Top 10 of the Year-End Chart: Ray Dalton, who contributes the vocals to Felix Jaehn's "Call It Love" at #4. This is highly unusual, since there are usually more music videos released from the U.S.A. than from other countries. For 2022, the next highest-charting American artist is Britney Spears (who appears alongside Elton John on "Hold Me Closer") at #13. The highest-charting American as a lead artist was Pink, whose "Irrelevant" clocked in at #20.
This year also marks the first time that an artist from Finland has captured the ultimate year-end #1 position. That honor went to Australia in 2018 (Troye Sivan's "Bloom"), England in 2019 (Sam Smith's "How Do You Sleep?"), the U.S.A. in 2020 (Lady Gaga's "Stupid Love"), and Australia again in 2021 (Troye Sivan's "Angel Baby").
A total of 1,012 music videos have appeared on Tad's LGBT Music Chart during the past twelve months. In order to qualify for the special Year-End Chart, the video must have reached at least #15 on the chart and spent at least 6 weeks within the Top 50.
Chart positions for the Year-End Chart are determined by averaging each video's position on three separate charts: (1) ranked by the total points accumulated on the weekly LGBT charts throughout the entire calendar year, (2) ranked by the video's peak position on the LGBT chart, and (3) ranked by the total number of weeks spent within the Top 50 of the LGBT chart.
