Midweek Music Update

 for 19th June, 2019

The Midweek Music Update (published on Wednesdays) is intended to give you a "sneak peek" at some new music that hasn't made my chart yet. It's comprised of two sections: the Hot New Track and the Fresh New Releases.

Each week, I'll choose one video for the Hot New Track -- one song that is certain to make it onto my Top 50 chart & playlist next weekend (based on the points it's earned so far).

The Fresh New Releases are two or three videos that appear likely to enter my Top 50 chart & playlist in the near future (based on YouTube views alone). All of the songs in this 2nd section will be relatively recent (i.e., released in the past month or so). Because they are so new, it might take an additional few weeks for them to make their way onto my chart.

Although I mention the total number of views for each video below, songs are selected based on their YouTube views from the past seven days only.

Hot New Track:
This week's Hot New Track is "Emotions" by gay American singer Elliot Jones. As I write this, the video has 254 views on YouTube. While that might not seem like a large number of views, it's the amount of increase over the past seven days (as a percentage of the total views) that's given him the extra points necessary to break through onto my chart. In the past week alone, the clip has gained an additional 38 views (and that's an impressive 19.10% increase from the week before).

Fresh New Releases:
The first Fresh New Release this week is "Your Mr" by pansexual British rapper Lady Leshurr. Her parents, who emigrated to England from the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts, often played reggae music in the household when she was a child and you can hear a bit of that early influence in Lady Leshurr's music now. According to her Wikipedia page, she began writing music at the age of six and released her first mixtape at age 14. The video currently has 1,308,278 views on YouTube.

The second Fresh New Release this week is "Call You Mine" by American duo The Chainsmokers and American singer Bebe Rexha. The Chainsmokers are not an LGBT act, but Bebe Rexha (whose solo single "Last Hurrah" was at #28 on this week's LGBT chart) identifies as bisexual. This clip now has 14,026,965 views on YouTube.

In previous editions of the Midweek Music Update, I've mentioned briefly that I'm revamping the formulas that I use to produce the LGBT Top 50 chart each week. Those changes will officially be in effect for this weekend's chart, and I'm confident that it will produce better playlists in the future. One of the biggest changes is in selecting the new songs that make it onto the Top 50 each week as new entries. From now on, the videos featured on the Midweek Music Update will go to the front of the queue of possible new entries on the following weekend's chart and playlist. (This is based largely on YouTube views, as described above.) I'll be adding new videos into the queue each week as well, and you can feel free to suggest others that you think I might've missed. (Please note, however, that they must be from LGBT artists or have some sort of LGBT-related content in order to be considered.) Any videos in the queue that were released more than 3 months ago are no longer eligible for the Top 50 chart & will be dropped from the queue.

I'm not going to embed them all here (because, to be honest, there are just too many of them) but I'll provide links for the dropped videos below if you're curious. The videos that have dropped out of the queue this week (and failed to make it onto the Top 50 chart) are listed below:

That's it for another edition of the Midweek Music Update. Make sure to come back on Saturday or Sunday (depending on your time zone) for the latest Top 50 chart & playlist. Until then, I hope you all have a great week!
